50 Billion devices / Steppenwolf

Today I read two quotes. One old and one new. One from the head, and one from the heart.

The first was from an IT Governance periodical from 2017:

…research predicts that by the year 2020, anywhere between 30 to 50 billion devices will be connected to the Internet. Such high levels of Internet proliferation can be incredibly beneficial to individuals, businesses and society at large …

The second was from a 1927 novel by Hermann Hesse entitled Steppenwolf:

And all this, I said, just as today was the case with the beginnings of wireless, would be of no more service to man than as an escape from himself and his true aims, and a means of surrounding himself with an ever closer mesh of distractions and useless activities.

I tend toward the views of Hesse.
